DIY - Industrial Decor - Floating Shelf

Guess what you can find at your plumbing supply store.... and do almost anything with them!

Industrial Decor DIY Couch and Floating shelf

Iron Floor Flange

Floating Shelf

Items needed:

1. Iron Floor Flange: First item is called a "iron floor flange fitting" YEP! That is what it is called! You will see a finished example above which we used to float the shelf behind the sofa. To the right is what it will look like at your local hardware store. They come in different diameters. I usually use the 3/4 inch diameter. You can find everything you need at Plumbers Supply Now, best prices and selection over your local big box retailer. The iron flange is available for $3.98.

2. Nipple Fitting: The next piece you will need is a "nipple fitting", which are available in many lengths. For the shelving project we used a 3/4 x 11" nipple from Plumbers Supply Now each for $3.84. Obviously you purchase the length based on your project.

Pipe cap

If you don't want the stronger statement as the flange on the front piece you can add a pipe cap.

Shelf bracket with measuring tape

Yes, my tape measure is well used! :)

3. Board: If you are doing a shelf as pictured above, head over to Lowe's or Home Depot they both have a variety of 12 inch wide boards - generally in 8ft lengths. They will cut the board to your desired width. Price range from $15- $40 per board.

4. Assembly: Next Step! Screw pieces together!

5. Optional - Paint and/or Stain: We chose gold spray paint for this project, you could also just leave the pieces in their natural galvanized state. Which is perfect industrial decor. For the board you can chose to leave it in their natural state or chose to stain or wax it. We chose a mix of stain and a paste wax.

6. Anchor to Wall: Finally anchor to the wall. My advice if you are not familiar with wall anchors and how to install grab a handy friend or hire a handy man. Speaking from experience! Many years ago I hung a shelf then attached a wine glass holder to the bottom. It was beautiful! Sitting in my living room suddenly hearing glasses tinkling.... the entire shelf was slowly pulling off the wall. My lesson was learned!

So, thinking out of the box. Now that we have a "stand" that can be made in almost any size think of the things you could do....

DIY Industrial Candle Stick holders

  • Coffee Table

  • Side Table

  • Wine rack

  • Cande Sticks

Endless possibilities!

Look at this for $199.00 from Wayfair - yes they got a little fancy.

So the cost breakdown for the custom shelf shown above was $60 which includes the paint, stain and wax. NOW that is a DEAL!

Cheers!

Happy Industrial Decor!
